Every girl wanted to be Barbie when they were little and everything seemed so possible. We would draw for hours, designing our houses and cars, who needed mortgages? And even though my dreams of meeting Ken faded as I became older, I was faced with my future in my hands; my life had only just begun.
It was time to take life seriously. So I enrolled at Greenhead College in Huddersfield aiming to hone my artistic skills and develop a trade. It’s been a great experience so far, but we’ve been instructed that in ‘these hard economic times’ it is important for us to get into working environments as soon as possible.
All students were told that we had the chance to go experience the real world. QUBA. That was my immediate choice. Yes I was nervous to take myself to a city I didn’t know and work with people I had never met but design is my passion and I would never miss such an opportunity.
As I approached the light gleamed through the enormous windows beaming over the office just like a dream. I knew that this was my kind of place!
Instantly thrown into the deep end I attended a meeting with a major client. I didn’t feel like another ‘work experience kid’. I felt like a respected adult. SEO, Digital Marketing, Analytics. If you came to me yesterday and asked me what they were I would have stared at you with a blank face- but within two days I feel like an expert. Working with the design team was a nerve racking thought but I’ve loved every second. It’s been a challenge but I have learned so much in just a few days and don’t want to stop!
It’s a surreal feeling really, like your looking into your future. You’re given this great chance to try out every part of a business and become part of the team. There hasn’t been one second where I haven’t felt challenged or become bored at the task ahead. And the best is yet to come!
As I sit here and look around me, I realise how lucky I am to have been given a chance to experience working at such a successful business and so far it has been better than I ever imagined.
